Seasons greetings and I hope you are all having a lovely break. To help you along the holiday period I have uploaded a relaxation sequence on the Sequences page. The poses on this sheet are all restorative, which means they are often supported by blocks, blankets, bolsters, and other props, designed to maximise comfort and allow you, the practitioner to fully let go. The poses are typically held longer—about 5 to 20 minutes. They are also arranged with the head below or near the same level as the heart, which helps to stimulate reflexes that quieten the brain and heart.
The benefits of restorative yoga have been shown to help cancer patients fight depression and fatigue, and is better than sleep for releasing tense muscles and relieving joint aches. The mind also benefits as a session can quickly calm the mind and it teaches us the conscious control of relaxation. When the body is deeply relaxed the nervous system is balanced and we gain a better perspective on ourselves and our daily interactions and encounters. Why not try a restorative sequence in your home practice once a week to see the benefits for yourself.

Last week would have been the 97th birthday of BKS Iyengar. In recognition of all of his work, Google honoured him with an animated doodle on his birthday. The Google doodle shows an animated figure performing various Asanas. The animator has the precision in the Asanas down to a 'T'! Mr Iyengar has been quoted as saying "When I stretch, I stretch in such a way that my awareness moves, and a gate of awareness finally opens," "When I still find some parts of my body that I have not found before, I tell myself, yes I am progressing scientifically... I don't stretch my body as if it is an object. I do yoga from the self towards the body, not the other way around." After lots of requests, I am very excited to announce that as of Monday January 11th I shall be teaching 2 new Monday evening yoga classes in Bishops Stortford. Classes will be held at the Committee Room (top room) of Bishops Park Community Centre (next to Tescos).
There is space for 10 students, so be quick to book your place with me via phone or send me a message through the contact page. 6.30 - 7.45pm - Beginners/General 7.45 - 9.15pm - General/Intermediate More details on the Classes and FAQ page. |
